Locally Made

Marine Biologist and pearl farmer, Serena Sanders has worked in the South Sea Pearl industry since 1983.

Her roles included pearl diving through to share ownership and management of pearl farms. In 2006 she founded Sirene Sea Pearls and purchased the first harvest of South Sea Pearls from the farm she co-owned in the Torres Straits region of Australia. These pearls were her “babies” – nurtured by her for five years.

Serena believes that her purpose in life is to educate people about the ocean and encourage people to take a role in preserving the pristine marine environment that is required by the pearl oyster to produce beautiful pearls.

Serena wants people to own South Sea pearls, know their history – where and how they are grown, and their unique characteristics – she wants each pearl to have a birth certificate or Authenticity Certificate passing with these pearls into a piece of jewellery.

She wants her legacy to be that each piece of pearl jewellery will carry its history and be loved, worn, and cared for by the owner. This would inspire sentimental meaning, passing down generations and ensure the pearl is treasured by the wearer.

In this way the pearls would carry a sense of obligation to protect the marine environment. This pristine marine world is crucial for the formation of pearls and most importantly for the planet.

Pearls are the only gem created by a living organism. Each individual pearl in the Sirene Sea Pearls collection is hand selected and uniquely tracked into a piece of jewellery. For this reason the collection is relatively small and very special.

Being passionate and knowledgeable in all aspects of the pearling industry are Serena’s super powers. She enjoys nothing more than sharing this with her customers to help them send the perfect gift.

South Sea Pearls and the environment

Australian pearls have international recognition. They are grown ethically and with environmental integrity

In 2017, the Australian pearling industry was independently certified as the world’s most ethical and environmentally sustainable choice by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC).

This certification or eco-label, helps you to make a choice knowing that the pearl fishery has been assessed according to global best practice sustainability standards that are second to none.

This is the first time a wild fishery has been certified as sustainable despite it being in commercial production for over 150 years, and the only wild fishery of its type in the world.

Sirene South Sea pearls can be bought with confidence knowing they were cultured in harmony with the natural marine environment, without damage to the seabed or wasteful by-catch.
